Wednesday Writings

The 10,000th lucky customer here was...TERRI TIFFANY! Go visit and tell her congrats if you get a chance. :) I'll be mailing her gift card tomorrow. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Blogging has been a hoot so far, thanks to the great people who populate this big, crazy blogosphere: YOU!

And speaking of contests, dear friend Kathryn Magendie whose soon-to-be-released book TENDER GRACES, is having a fun contest at her blog, so stop by and take a guess.

Next time, I'll be posting tips from Donald Maas' book Writing the Breakout Novel. But for now, I'm going to work on my manuscript, so wish me luck. I'll leave you with a question~~

What moves a book from "good" to your "top favorites" list?

Okay...nose to the grindstone...

A favorite book will connect with me emotionally in lots of ways, move rapidly along, and leave me with "wow!"

"Good" is a book I liked but will likely never read it again."Top favorites" get re-read, and I've read my favorite book 10 or so times.

Thanks, Barbara & expat. Happy reading!

The book has to grab me and make me cry and make me really think about it rather than life! AND THANK YOU FOR MY GIFT!!!!!

Congrats, Terri!

A book has to draw me in to the point that I can't put it down and stop doing other things in order to read it. My most current favorite book is Wally Lamb's "The Hour I First Believed".

Good luck on the book. Read your comment on Suburb Sanity's site about celebrities & I agree. Hugs***Renea

yayy - congrats to Terri! *smiling*

And what moves it to the top? Hmm -- good character development, and when I know the writer isn't "cheating" - and I could explain "cheating" but don't want to have some long arse comment here! *laugh*

Thanks for linking me *smiling* ... what a good friend you are.

And congrats on a dang fine successful blog - we all love ya Angie!

Congrats, Terri! And good luck on your WIP, Angie.

What moves a book into the next category for me is, like you said on my blog this morning, when it tugs at all those heartstrings. Some chord is reached, and it just seems perfect.

A good book moves to my top favorite when I can't wait to pick it back up and re-read it knowing there was something I missed. Just like a movie that I never get tired of seeing.

Good - left me feeling so-so. Great - stays with me long after I read it. Those types of books are few and far in between!

Linda, I adore that Lamb book! Happy reading.

Thanks for stopping by, Renea. I'll return the favor shortly.

Aww, Kathryn, we is members of the mutual admiration club. :)

Janna, couldn't agree more about fav. book category reasons. And thanks for the luck on the WIP.

Yep, Ang, when you're magnetized to it. LOL

Melissa, you got that right. Those characters that set up house in my memory are the unforgetables.

A good book moves to the top favorite book just like the movies I watch. If I can't wait to read the book again to catch things I missed during the first read then it is definitely on "My Top Favorite" list.

Humor. Plain and simple. If it makes me laugh because it brings in real life that we all deal with, I'm hooked. Like Jennifer Weiner's Good In Bed and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books.

Yay to Terri and good luck on your ms. :)

Angie Ledbetter said...

Sharla, I love a good laugh too. I'll have to check out those books. I'm woefully behind in reading. Ug.

Hey, Hilary, and thanks!

Congratulations to Ms. Magendie!

Whenever I'm reading, I try and visualize everything. This unfortunately makes me a slow reader. So I thing I look for in a book is a lot a descriptions, but not so much that there's nothing left to my imagination. I also like a book that teaches me something without having it specifically pointed out. I think that's why I find Sci-fi appealing.

I agree with everyone else, the books you connect with emotionally and feel what they are going through. The ones you push other things aside for just so you can keep reading. Those special stories that you know you will read again and again.

Good luck with your ms today Angie! :D

Usually it's the writing that moves a good book to the favorites pile. If I can envision something in a slightly different way, or if the narrator has an insightful take on life, I'll probably connect with it.

Rachel Burton said...

Laughing out loud. Or tears running down the face. Or so worried about a character I'm gripping the book way too hard and my hand cramps. Things like that, I think, though it's hard to answer for sure!

To me, a "good" book tends to be more commercial, while a "top favorites" book is usually literary. A good book is one that I can't put down, one that draws me in and keeps me guessing right until the very end.

A top favorite book, on the other hand, usually doesn't have a lot of action or thrills, but I remember it long after I'm done reading it. My favorite books of all time are the ones that have truly unforgettable characters and a theme that speaks to the core of who I am as a human being.

Angie Ledbetter said...

Hear ya, Ang.

Eric, I guess screen writers have a different set of druthers than novel writers in what they look for?

Thank you, Jenn.

Wendy, I love a fresh perspective and voice too. Makes it rise like cream in my stack of favs.

All good reasons, Rachel.

Yeah, LC, like those unforgettables in To Kill a Mockingbird (my personal #1 fav)!

Ms. B1tch is tired tired tired...(and very hungry said...

What? Ms B1tch didn't win? even though she hasn't come by in a while, she should have won just be the virtue of her cuteness and queenliness - well! ....oh well...tee ta dum! She likes you anyway, Miss Angie!

what moves a book from 'good' to my 'top favourites'? its simple - a picture book. :)

Jessica Nelson said...

Congrats Terri!
What moves a book up? I think how much it engages me, if the ending really jerks at my emotions but ends happily. If it ends badly, then I'll hate it. LOL Plus, if I remember the characters long after I'm done reading it, that's always a mover upper.

WOW! Terri! the 10,000th! that's super cool! And wow, angie good work, gettin that many people here! My most favorite books have to make me a better person after reading them. Something that makes me giggle and dream and remember them long after I've put them down.

Angie, a good book for me is when I finish it, it feels like saying goodbye to a dear friend.

Okay, just have to comment on your comment about Mr. Google being your love. Can you actually imagine someone asking; who is your love and you say, "oh, it's Mr. Google? Mr. Google makes me giggle." okay, I need caffeine, now!

I'm not the least bit happy for your winner. I wanted to be the winner. I'm just being honest.
And I love your friend, and my new friend, Kathryn Magendie. She is the best - thanks for introducing her. As for what is a great book. That is a tough question. I'm going to have to give that some more thought.

Angie Ledbetter said...

Ms. B, I likes you too, even though you a B. :)

t i m, I favor books that create a picture in my head too. *smile*

Yep, me too, Jessica.

Thanks, giddy girl!

kimmi, yeah, good books are like good friends for sure. And I HAVE told people my boyfriend is Mr. Google. (Guess I should give him a first name. Gary?)

Debbie---LOL! But please say how you feel. And I'm glad you & Kat are friends now. Just remember, she was my friend first, and I know where you live! :)
