Who Knew?

Instead of personality quizzes today, let's talk about obvious things we might just not be aware of.

Here's an example from a friend's email forward that I've changed some:

I really did have to go check this out for myself after reading it. You know when you try to pull aluminum foil off to cover a pot or dish, and the whole roll comes tumbling out of the box and unrolls on the floor? Then you have to try to roll it back up into the box and it's all crinkly. It doesn't have to be like that!

If you look at the end of the box, written plainly (for anyone who'd ever think to look there) to see, it says, "Press here to lock end." In that same location, there's a tab for locking the roll into place. I wondered, has this nifty locking mechanism always been here? Why have I never seen it before? Why isn't this pointed out in Reynold's Wrap commercials? Even the store brand foils have this contraption.

Guess what else? So does Saran Wrap! I can't tell ya how many times I've made a gummed up mess out of a roll of cling wrap, which mostly only sticks to me or itself instead of the intended item.

Do me a favor...please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't know this. Lie if you have to. And share any other kitchen secrets you might be selfishly keeping to yourself.

One last thing -- why would someone leave this UFO (Unusable Flippin' Object) in my fridge? {We may need to explore this more deeply in coming posts.}

So THAT'S where I left my olives........

The only kitchen tip that I have is to use latex gloves when chopping jalapeno peppers. It only took me 3 times to learn about this. It's only 2 olives. Eat them.

Lawd! I did not know that! huhn. Well.

I laughed at Vodka Mom's comment...haw! Oh...Vodka Mom if you see this: Ketel One or Grey Goose or....?

It's dang cold here this morning and my brain is mush....hmmmm, kitchen tip...okay, if your cutting board slides, put a damp kitchen towel under it - a chef's trick. To get the pit out of an avacado, "slam" your knife blade into it and pull the pit out. Use a coffee grinder to grind your own spices - just don't use the same one you make coffee with.

Oh, I *snicker* didn't *chuckle* know about the tabs, Angie. Honest!

oooo...I love me some olives. Okay, a kitchen tip. Let me see, well if you are using peanut butter or corn syrup (anything sticky) in a recipe and you have to measure it out, spray your measuring cup or spoon with non-stick cooking spray and it will come right out. Clean up is a breeze. Good tip for all those holiday treats being made.

Merry Christmas!

Those olives can be eaten and then washed down with the 1/8 ounce of juice you should find in the door and finish it off with the cracker crumbs found in the box in the pantry. Next question?

Didn't know that either, and stealing "UFO!"

Vodka, please come and get 'em! (Plenty of other good fixin's in the fridge you're welcome to also.)

Good tip, Oren. Thank you.

VK's godmother's friend -- (I'll have an announcement concerning my "godchild" this Wednesday, so check back!) Thanks for all the good tippage for the kitchen. I've been afraid to use the knife in avo one, but I'm gonna have to soon.

Oh, Michelle, and I thought you wuz my friend! LOL

Ang, woulda been glad to give you the olives, but Vodka Mom has dibs. I'd heard of using the Pam before, but didn't know if it worked. Thanks!

Dang, Mz. Debbie, why didn't you wake me up while you were here diggin' through my fridge? I'd have at least made you coffee! LOL

Carrie, I feel better now. I'm not the only kitchen dummy. :) Steal UFO all ya want!

I never knew that about the foil! Goodness. Now I'm going to have to check it out on my roll of foil when I get home.

What is this "Reynold's Wrap" and "Saran Wrap" that you speak of?
(Why yes ladies, I am single)

I have no clue what's in the jar, but I wouldn't get it near an open flame.

Biggest kitchen dummie here, I feel like it's a trick question test at times. : D

Seriously, Angie, I didn't know either!

I had to go look. Those tabs are indeed on the sides of my aluminum foil. Not there, however, on the giant economy Costco sized saran wrap. I wonder why if they put the tabs there in the first place, they didn't just go all the way an push them in for us.

Melissa & Kimmi, welcome to the IDK club. :)

LOL, Eric. Don't worry about that kitchen stuff. Just keep eating out. No mess, no fuss that way! (Will take your suggestion to avoid open flames under advisement.)

Deb, that's an excellent question!

Eek! I had no clue. I'm off to investigate...

Put me in the clueless section.

If you ever need to remove ring around the collar from a dress shirt, use a clarifying shampoo. It works wonders!

I'm so not my mother...I don't have any hints from Heloise! I'm racking my brain because I'm sure I know SOMETHING. Surely something landed in there somewhere but I won't find it till I need it. And I did not know about the foil tabs. I have been duly educated and can now let MY teenage daughter know so she'll grow up to be better than me! :)

Angie Ledbetter said...

Jessica, wouldn't it be nice if those handy dandy instructions were on the SIDE of the box? :)

JyLnC, you're most welcome to sit by me. LOL And thanks for the good tip.

Hey, Sharla. You can rest easy now. Your mothering chores are complete.

OK ... I had to go look ... and darn if it isn't right there. Who ever looks on the end of a box of aluminum foil????? And ... where was this post on Thanksgiving??? :)

Hm ... kitchen tip ... well ... my tip is to find someone who loves to cook and is good at it ... and doesn't expect too much help ... and then ... marry them. That's what I did. :)

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!

I'm here! i'm here! And alive--erm, barely! LOL! Christmas with the rugrats is almost here! Eeeh! Can't wait! And I did know this! LOL! Only because I received this email about a year ago! LOL! I've been foil and seran wrap happy ever since!

Hmm...kitchen tip...I can't think of one. I never use aluminum foil if I can avoid it because of that pesky not touching metal deal I have. I use Glad press-n-seal. I'm obsessed with the stuff!

Melissa Amateis said...

I checked my foil last night and it did not have any such locking contraption. Of course, it's from Walmart, so that may explain things. ;-)

Angie Ledbetter said...

Small, that may just be the best "kitchen" advice ever. Merry Christmas to y'all too!

Giddy (JJ), may you and the gorgeous Reds have a wonderful Christmas in every way. :)

Love the Press 'n Seal too, Colby. (Didn't know you had foil phobia.) hehe

Melissa, you may need to get a refund.
