In Memoriam

I lost my good and faithful pet last night. Darla was a 16-year-old Boston Terrier who'd been with me through thick and thin. She was like my fourth child, and was an excellent pet to my children. Below the picture of her, you'll see her new resting place in our backyard.

The old gal always did her job to the best of her ability. When my husband (King Rufus) traveled for work for long months at a time, she never once failed to alert me of strangers driving up the long dark driveway. She knew all our friends' vehicles and would stand by the door to greet them. Darla guarded her house and people with fierce attention. She patiently put up with the indignities small children will heap upon a pet. Her love and devotion were unconditional. She was a friend. A part of my family.

I will miss her. I picture her now running free as the wind, once again chasing birds and squirrels on strong young legs, free from pain and old age. I couldn't have asked for a better pet.

*Goodbye, my friend.*

Angie,
Sorry about the death of your pup. They have an effect that you don't realize until they are not there.
She is home now.

I'm so sorry for you today! I've lost two dogs and never realized how much I would grieve for them--they are like family,:( I still admit to missing them seven years later. Take care!

*SOB* ...I am so sad! I adored Miss Darla and having lost my old girl recently, I know how this hurts so deeply, how the house is emptier and quieter...she was such a good girl, loving and true. I'm so sorry, Angie...

It is hard, huh, Terri? I'm thankful for the years I had her.

Thanks, K. It makes me feel better to think about our two old gals romping together now in some paradise.

Oh, Angie, I'm so sorry. My nose burns and my eyes water for you, for I know what it's like to lose a pet.

May all your wonderful memories hold fast.

I couldn't believe it when your page started loading and I saw Darla's photo. I was just going to ask about her last week. That is not what I wanted to see/hear. I am so sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful addition to your already beautiful family. I feel sad. Rest in peace, Darla.

Thank you, PW. She's happy and well now, and that makes me smile.

I'm very sorry for your little Darla. They are special friends, aren't they, that we're blessed to have in our lives.

I am so so sorry. I lost my dear cat Thomas a few years ago and I think those who haven't ever lost a pet can't understand how much it can hollow you. I don't know if you've ever read it, but look up online for the poem "Rainbow Bridge." It's a beautiful description of where pets go when they leave us.

Angie Ledbetter said...

I'll look it up. Thanks, Colby.

Angie, here is a link to that poem in case you had any trouble finding it. http://www.petloss.com/rainbowbridge.htm

That really was an uplifting poem. Thanks for coming back to post it.

Oh, Angie, I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. I know how hard it is to lose such a beloved pet as I lost my Charlie Brown a few months ago. Even now, I think about him and want to cry.

Give yourself all the time in the world you need to grieve. I believe God put them here on this earth to be our steadfast companions who love us unconditionally.

Sending hugs to you...

*sniff* Thank you, Melissa.

Thanks, Wendy girl. They truly are the best, most faithful dogs I know of. And so so smart.
