Christmas Quiz & Contest!

FIRST ANNUAL
GUMBO WRITER'S
CHRISTMAS QUIZ!
(c) 2008 Angie Ledbetter

Are you an Ebenezer or a Pere Noel? You'll need pen and paper and about 5 minutes to find out by answering the True or False questions below -- without the use of a search engine. And remember, Santa's watching, so be honest:

  1. I know the meaning of the two names listed above.
  2. Even when I'm in a hurry, I'd rather write out "Christmas" than "Xmas" where needed.
  3. I attend or host at least one holiday gathering every year.
  4. I've done at least two of the following: worn a Christmasy costume (as an adult), gone caroling, made homemade goodies to share, visited the ill or lonely, decorated the house even though I didn't feel like it, drank eggnog, played Secret Santa at work, laughed at my own holiday kitchen disaster, gone to midnight Mass or service on Christmas Eve, attended or rode a float in a holiday parade.
  5. It doesn't make me feel weird to say Merry Christmas as opposed to Happy Holidays.
  6. I have at least a handful of ornaments that are over 20 years old.
  7. There are certain Christmas books or movies I must read/watch during every Christmas holiday.
  8. In It's a Wonderful Life, I know George's guardian angel's name. I also know when an angel gets its wings.
  9. My Christmas tree is never re-boxed or out on the curb till after the New Year.
  10. Besides Rudolph, I can name at least four of Santa's reindeer.

Now, boys and girls, wasn't that fun? Give yourself 5 points for every True you wrote, and 0 for the Falses. Add up your total. How'd ya do? (Scroll down to find out, then report your scores in a comment if you dare!)

0-10: Take a very long nap until the new year, Scrooge!

15-25: You're out of step with the season, but at least you're trying. Give yourself a shot of Christmas Spirit!

30-40: You're on Santa's "nice, not naughty" list, so be sure to hang a big stocking this year!

45-50: You're def one of Santa's best elves and of good Christmas cheer. Thank you for spreading the love!

Now...the Christmas Contest!...

[No purchase necessary to enter. LOL] Send me a link, jpeg or somehow otherwise transmit to me a photo of your 2008 Christmas tree by no later than midnight on December 10. I'll collect them, keep 'em safe and unveil them in a post so everyone can vote on the one they like most. And because I love my new bloggerish friends so much, I'll send the winner a cool, awesome, fantastic ornament I promise you won't have another one like. Got your tree up already? {I know Colby and Terri do...I've seen the pictures!} Get that camera out and start clickin'.

To all you Bahumbugs and Happy Elves, have a great week!

45! I'm amazed, because I usually feel so stressed out from Thanksgiving onward.

Angie Ledbetter said...

Congrats, Tut. You've got more spirit than you thought! :)

OK--now I'm going to take a better picture and send it!

Go, giddy girl! Send whichever you think is the most spectacular. And I really hope you post pics and the "rest of the story" after your ball is over and all the mess is picked up.

PS...with all them beautiful Reds to take care of at home, and writing, and blogging, and throwing real honest-to-goodness fairy balls, when in the world did you find time to decorate THREE trees? Good.ness! What do y'all drink over there across da pond? (Might I purchase some??) :)

OMG! I answered True to two of the questions, and an iffy on the third. I thought I would score way lower.

I guess to make things up, I'll send a picture of the tree. Bah-humbug!

Oh gosh, I have to go get it yet! LOL I got the highest score - definitely watch The Grinch, Charlie Brown, and yes, even Rudolph every year. And we toss in Christmas Vacation and still laugh at every dumb joke or prank.

Jessica Nelson said...

Man, I forgot to come back for that other game you had going on. Okay, so I'll try to make it back for this but first I've gotta go get the kiddo from school. :-)

Barb Davis said...

A score of 45! Merry Christmas!!

Where do I send this puppy?

Oh, and at a solid 45 I'm a good elf! YAY!

Angie Ledbetter said...

Lori, I didn't know you moonlighted as an Elf! Congrats & send in the pic if you get one by the
10th. :)

Kids always come first, Jessica. Have a great week.

Woohoo, Barbara! Great start to the month. Send me your picture when ya can!

WTG, Colby girl! Send me your pic at AngieDLed@aol.com Thanks.

50! Unfortunately, I probably won't have our display up by the deadline (we go through to January 6th, so we also don't get it all up too too early.) If it happens earlier, though, I'll be sure to send a pic for you.

Melissa Amateis said...

I'm definitely in the Christmas spirit! And I sent you my tree photo. :-)

~j said...

woohoo! 50 points!

the tree is up but i'll be hard-pressed to have it finished by the 10th. i'll give it my best effort though. hehehe

so many ornaments and so few branches....

I live fulltime in a travel trailer so I don't put up a Christmas tree. But, this year, I am working at a Christmas Tree sales lot, and having a wonderful time there. I have a whole "lot" of trees :)

Amy Sue Nathan said...

15 -- and I'm JEWISH! Pretty good for someone who doesn't celebrate or decorate or anything, huh???

Guess I'm outta the contest. No tree for me. :-(

Although here's a link to my favorite published holiday essay. Does it count? ;)

Go Suldog, go Suldog! We don't take our tree down till wayyyyy after the Epiphany either...sometimes it's still up in March. LOL. Loved your grandma tribute today. Hey, I'll give you a "free entry" in the contest if you send that picture of you wearing a certain chapeau. LOL

Melissa, I got your pic. Thanks!

Angie Ledbetter said...

LOL, Jill. Kudos on the perfect score. And I sooo hear ya on the branches/ornament thing.

Karen, if you can get a good shot of the tree lot offerings, I'll count that as your entry!

Now, Amy, you know I'd never disqualify you from any contest of mine. You're in by virtue of creative thinking...even though you had a sucky score. LOL

Angie:

The pic is on the way - maybe along with another that may be worthwhile.

I'm in the 30-40 range. About half of my friends are Jewish, so in terms of greetings, I go the "Happy Holidays" route unless I know for sure to say either "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hanukkah."

Sometimes I don't think so fast and get it backwards.

I'll send you a link when I get my tree up this weekend.

Rachel Burton said...

I got thirty, but I haven't been saving ornaments since i was ten; give me a little time!

Got a 40. No tree yet, maybe this week. Still playing catch-up after continuing to wall paper the gym at school with two more STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. I love those kids.
Oren

Angie Ledbetter said...

Got it, Sul. Thanks. :)

Good job, Wendy. You're a good elf.

Rachel, since you're a wee young 'un, you can add 5 extra points to your score. LOL

Way to go, Oren! Good news on those runner kids too.

Woohoo! I got 50! It's a Wonderful Life is my Favorite Movie. I'm always saying random quotes from it.

(In response to someone asking where an acquaintance is): "She's about to close up the library!"

Or, in response to good news: "Hot dog!"

I ended up with a respectable 40 but it bothers me I couldn't remember George's angel's name.

I'm doing a minimalist decorating scheme this year. I purchased a little decorated tree from Costco and added two bows and a star tree topper. I don't think it can compete with some of the drop dead gorgeous trees I've seen on the blogs. However, I'll send my pic along in the next day or so.

It will be fun seeing everyone's creative Christmas spirit!

Angie Ledbetter said...

Jess, my fav movie too! Congrats on the top score, and love your blog.

JyLnC: CLARENCE! :) Please do send your tree pic. We love variety and think it's the spice o' life here at Gumbo Writer. LOL

Got a "45!" No Christmas tree pics, as my 384 sq.' house is just too tiny to accommodate one! ~ Deb
