Blogging + Personality = ?

On Mondays here at Gumbo Writer, we usually banter about trivia, things that make ya go hmmm?, or take a little time out to explore some sort of online quiz. What do all these things have in common, besides being lumped under the Tout le Monde (everything else in the world) heading? Well, bloggy buds, they help us discover new and interesting things about ourselves. And who doesn't love doing that?

So, the other day I get an email asking me to participate in a scientific study by taking a personality quiz. It concerned how personality relates to blogging. You know I jumped on that with both size-10s! The quiz was really interesting, and after slogging through the longer one (you have an option of taking a short one instead), I learned how I scored in the "Big 5" personality categories ~ Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness and Agreeableness. Cool, huh?

The online research study is being conducted Mr. Tal Yarkoni under the supervision of Dr. Simine Vazire at Washington University in St. Louis. The study investigates the relation between people's personality and the content and style of their writing, and has been approved by the Washington University Human Research Protection Office. I asked Mr. Yarkoni if he'd like me to pass the word to blogging friends, and he said yes. If you're interested in finding out more, the study can be accessed HERE.

I haven't tried these yet, but there are other online projects listed in case you want to find out even more about your personality, and help further scientific research:
study 1 and study 2.

Are you fascinated with self-discovery and learning new things? If you write, do you think this curiosity helps you improve your craft? What say you?

I am interested by such things, about myself and others. And I do think it plays into my curiosity and desire to dream up characters. It all goes hand in hand, I think, with that part of my brain that loves to people-watch and learn about other people.

First off, I love the blog changes you're doing. Someone has been a very busy girl this weekend.

I received the same email on Saturday (I think.) I haven't taken the test yet. Perhaps when I get a free moment...

Katty Boop, welcome to the club, my fine feathered friend. :)

Why thank you, my eagle-eyed bloggy friend, mlh. (Hey, I must have birds on the brain this morning!) I think you'll like the test & results when you get a round tuit. :)

Every time I discover something about myself, it's usually something I've denigrated in others. As you might imagine, this is not joyful.

The good thing is that it has taught me to be much more tolerant and less critical, as I know that sooner or later my criticism will come back to bite me in the bum.

Sul, how'd you get so wise? Great thoughts for a Monday morning.

I took the long survey since I'm at home with a sick child on a VERY cold day.

I scored nearly 100% on the agreeableness: Agreeableness is the tendency to be sympathetic and cooperative towards others. People who score high on agreeableness strive for social harmony and value getting along with others.

Yep, that's me! I also scored very high on the conscientiousness, but was very low on "openness to experience" and "extraversion."

All in all, I'd say it was pretty darn accurate.

Okay, I went ahead and took the long test. Out of the Big 5, I scored the lowest on the extrovert part. No big surprise there. A little shocked I scored 65% on the neurotic part. But I scored 90% and 80% respectively for openess, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.

So I am an open, conscientious introvert who will agree with you about being neurotic. Or, in other words, I am a writer.

I can live with that.

This looks fun! And yes, I always used to like those Myers Briggs tests and stuff, though they get a little wearing when you have to fill one out at job interviews. I applied for a job and one of the personality questions was "I think people should be allowed to wear bathing suits in public - agree or disagree?" Being a Flordian, I ckecked agree, which told my potential employer I had issues with authority!

Wasn't it interesting, Melissa? I found that particular quiz to be more accurate than others I've taken. Not surprising, I got a 96.6% on Extraversion and 93.8% in Agreeableness. :)

mlh, love your assessment!

LOL, Rachel. But did ya get the job? hehe

I received that email also but did not participate. I was scared to death they would say I didn't have a personality or was some sort of psycho or something. It could go either way with me.

LOL, Debbie. Don't be skeert. It's interesting!

I got that email and couldn't decide it it was real or not--I trust NOTHING! So I ignored it. Nice to know it was real:)0

I'm very nosey ... I mean curious ... about everything. After years of trying to figure out why I do what I do ... decided it wasn't all that interesting so ... have moved on to other people (my family is thrilled) and things (I think that's why I started my blog).

Your posts are always fun!

As usual, all over the lot. Conscientiousness (madeup word) seemed to carry the day. These tests really can coufuse country boys. Guess its time to move on to the next project.

I haven't had time to take them...too much going on with Christmas, but I love, love, love self-discovery. I'll try to take one of them soon. Thanks a million for the links.

Terri, take the quiz if you get a chance. If nothing else, it gives good insight into some of the major areas that form a personality, so you can use that in your character-building in writing.

Ditto, Colby. :)

Fun, hunh, Marilyn?

Thanks, Small. (Oh woe to the family!) :)

Oren, you're just a well-rounded mixed bag of a person. LOL

Barbara, you're welcome. And do NOT stop the Christmas goody production line. Oh, those chocolate covered cherries you make!
