Spotlight On...

On Saturdays here at Gumbo Writer's place, we [wait, there is no "we," so why did I address myself in the third person?] highlight a great blog, a nice person, a nifty place on the Net, or some current event. Since everyone's tired of hearing about the presidential campaign and the troubled financial market, how about sharing some blog love with...{drumroll noise insertion here}...Amie over at Written Expressions ---> http://written-expressions.blogspot.com/

Why, you ask? Well, the blog is very easy on the eyes, not all crazy-fied like mine. It's a nice read and the blog mistress speaks clearly so even I can understand. :) The posts I've read so far are positive in slant and have some really good writing suggestions. But, most of all, you should visit because of this, in the author's own words under the post, "Don't Make me Beg": "Okay, help a sister out. I recently added the "Follow This Blog" gadget to my page, and now it's taunting me with its lack of followers."

Who could refuse such an honest, heartfelt plea?

The blogger's straightforward request has me thinking. What's the best way you've found to draw a loyal readership to your blog home? And do you prefer the Follow function or the Blog Roll thingy?

Happy Saturday to y'all. I'm writing this Friday night after my usual raffle-ticket-selling-at-the-football-game stint, and before I have to be at mandatory work day at the school's baseball field. Woohoo, a double header of fun for the Mom! ;)

I'll leave you, my wonderful bloggy friends, with a picture that made me smile in real life vs. that funky smiley icon that I overuse and which probably gets on peoples' nerves:

Feel free to add a caption to mine -- "I wuv hangin' out with fwiends."

How do I get people to my blog - erk, I used to visit a lot more and that drew more people, but that takes so much time...I do try to visit around as much as I can, and try to keep the posts fresh....I lost a lot of visitors last year when I was hardly blogging at all due to this and that in life .....but, getting back to it!

Photos help! people seem to like my photos.

Great caption, Kathryn, and thanks for the tips. It really is time consuming...but so much fun to visit around. I agree photos are a good addition too. ;)

Sounds like a great gal with a great blog! I'll definitely check her out.

I think if you visit many blogs and leave comments, those people will in turn read and lead others to yours. It's not an overnight thing, but that's how it's been for me - I guess over the course of a full year. Good luck! And I make use of both the Follow tool AND my blog roll. :)

LOVE the baby picture! "Hey, you dot bweast miwk on yowah chin."

I'm with Janna; visiting other blogs and then I just write what I feel like writing. I hope if they enjoy it, they'll come back. :)

Great picture! Caption: "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?"

For driving traffic ... I like both the followers thingy and the blog roll thingy. Since I like to see my "name in lights" and hope people will click on it, I try to visit the other ones and leave comments. It's kind of like an unspoken blogger rule of etiquette. But if the first couple of posts that I read on their site don't interest me, I rarely go back so ... content is important. BTW, I visit this one often ... great content.

Good thoughts, Janna. Your caption is presh!

LOL, Written, made me laff! And you're welcome.

Ditto for me, Colby.

Thank you, Small. I enjoy your blog too. It's refreshing. Love ya caption too.

Maggie May -- is that from the Rod Stewart song? One of my favs. Met him in New Orleans' French Quarter one time and hung out. Long story, long ago. LOL. Thanks for dropping in. The pic is cute. I can't quit looking at it!

Good question. I'm always quite surprised and pleased to see comments on my blog - thanks kindly for yours! I find that the numbers have grown over the year and a bit mostly by visiting and commenting on others blogs, and by taking the time to answer each and every comment. Both of which you appear to do.

I've also disabled the word verification, and don't use moderation mode except in rare circumstances. Also, as a blog reader, I tend to avoid sites that ask you to key in your name, website and email address - and then a difficult-to-decipher word verification. It's not that I mind sharing the personal info, it's just tedious.

I tend to stick with the Blogroll thingy. I'm not so sure how it differs from the other - and having both don't appear to me to be necessary.

Adorable photo. :)

Thanks, Hilary. I didn't even know you could disable that annoying feature, which I'm going to do. Hope I don't get spammed, but I guess I can always put it back on. Happy Sunday to you.
